TOP 3 Majors - Graduates from Elite Schools

Our research analysis scrutinizes the top three choices of college majors among graduates from 14 prestigious institutions in 2021, in light of market demand trends.

  • Econometrics and Quantitative Economics emerged as the top pick at 11 of the 14 schools. It dominated at the University of Chicago, where 23% of graduates opted for this major. Substantial percentages were also noted at Yale (13%), Dartmouth (12%), and Northwestern (12%). However, it did not feature among the top three fields at Cornell, Stanford, and USC. Despite this major's popularity, students should be aware of potential broader opportunities in interdisciplinary fields related to economics.

  • Computer Science was the second most favored major, featuring in the top three fields at 10 out of the 14 schools. It commanded the majority at Stanford, with 17% of graduates choosing this field. Columbia followed with 13%, then Princeton with 12%, and Brown with 10%. Other schools reported percentages between 8% and 5%. Despite the high market demand for computer science, surprisingly, it did not figure among the top three fields at Yale, U Penn, Northwestern, and UCLA.

  • Political Science and Government were only among the top three fields at four schools, with Dartmouth reporting 12%, Columbia 8%, and both Yale and UCLA at 7%. Despite these lower percentages, these majors' interdisciplinary potential may make them attractive to certain students.

  • History, though popular at Yale with 7% of its graduates choosing it, did not feature among the top three fields at any other institutions. Similarly, Labor and Industrial Relations contributed to 6% of graduates at Cornell but was not popular at other schools.

Unique majors that appeared in the top three at specific schools included Sociology at UCLA, Finance and Registered Nursing at U Penn, Engineering at Stanford (which is a high-demand field in the job market), Digital Communication/Media and Multimedia at Northwestern, Cellular and Molecular Biology at Berkeley, and Business Administration and Management at USC.

Despite the high market demand for Business Administration and Management, it only emerged in the top three majors at USC. Interestingly, the high-demand field of Engineering only appeared in the top three at Stanford. This discrepancy suggests that students should consider market demand trends alongside academic interests when choosing a major.

Moreover, Registered Nursing, which features high market demand, appeared in the top three at U Penn, aligning with the ongoing need for healthcare professionals.

In conclusion, prospective students should consider the popularity of a major among peers in tandem with its potential market demand and future career opportunities. Our findings aim to provide a comprehensive guide to students as they make these crucial decisions.
